Uber Settles Lawsuit With Waymo, Will Pay $245 Million

  • Trade secret files could be stored anywhere witnesses in Waymo Uber trial say

Because yesterday Kalanick wrapped up his second and last day on the stand in federal court in San Francisco by repeating his claim that he didn't hire a top Google engineer for the objective of stealing technology secrets for self-driving cars. The computer forensics expert Uber hired to scrub the engineer at the center of the dispute, Friedberg resumed testifying in the fourth day of trial in San Francisco federal court.

In the lawsuit, Waymo, Alphabet's self-driving vehicle unit, said former Waymo engineer Levandowski downloaded more than 14,000 confidential documents in December 2015 before Kalanick hired him at Uber in 2016.

Uber's current CEO Dara Khosrowshahi apologized to Waymo in a statement released shortly after the ruling.

Kalanick insisted that Uber was not working on flying cars, but he said Page was mad that Uber was hiring Google employees and taking its intellectual property. But the trial is now over.

Google's parent company, Alphabet, is set to receive 0.34 percent of Uber's equity at a $72 billion valuation as part of the agreement.

Waymo alleges that Levandowski heisted eight trade secrets from Google before leaving the company in January 2016.

Another source points out that the subject of whether Uber actually used Waymo's trade secrets had barely surfaced during the first week of the trial.

On Friday, a few days after the case had gone to court, both sides agreed on a settlement. Google invested in Uber.

Google's autonomous driving startup Waymo has settled its legal battle vs. ride-hailing service Uber Technologies for $245 million, reports said Friday.

He also says Uber is making sure its self-driving vehicle research represents only Uber's work, though he expressed "regret" for his company's actions. This includes an agreement to ensure that any Waymo confidential information is not being incorporated in Uber Advanced Technologies Group hardware and software.

Waymo, the company spun off from Google's self-driving project, had accused Uber of poaching its top self-driving auto engineer, Anthony Levandowski, who had led Google's efforts on autonomous vehicles since 2011.

While the technical details of Waymo's case were not revealed, it was widely believed to focus on Lidar, a laser-based system which is critical to enabling autonomous cars to get a three-dimensional picture of its surroundings. If that's not the case, then it would have to rebuild its LiDAR or retrofit its cars with LiDAR purchased on the open market, a potentially costly and time consuming move.

A man arrives at the Uber offices in Queens, New York, US on February 2, 2017.

Kalanick denied telling the board that diligence on Levandowski had come back "clean". The judge in the case didn't allow that figure into the trial.

The Shakespearean term has aggressive overtones. Kalanick said, "I don't know, I don't remember". He's looking to improve Uber's relationship with drivers, negotiate with cities such as London that threaten to boot the service, and generally present a public face that contrasts with the take-no-prisoners approach of his predecessor.
