US Congress approves bill ending brief gov't shutdown

The Republican-led Congress on Thursday was rounding up support for a bipartisan budget bill that would put the government on track for annual deficits topping $1 trillion, a gap last seen toward the end of Obama's first term. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell did not allow for the amendment to be added, triggering the short shutdown.

The White House kept its distance from the quarreling on Capitol Hill.

Importantly, Ryan said, a two-year budget deal will enable Congress to "step off this carousel of short-term funding bills" and focus on other issues.

A carefully crafted, bipartisan stopgap funding and budget package was introduced with confidence earlier this week by Senate leaders, who predicted swift passage before the expiration at midnight on Thursday of current funding authority. The bill contains several controversial provisions, such as a new voucher program to give bullied students scholarships to attend different schools, and a requirement that teachers unions reapply for certification if they fall below 50 percent membership in their district.

A brief US government shutdown ended on Friday after Congress passed and President Donald Trump signed into law a wide-ranging deal expected to push budget deficits into the $1 trillion-a-year zone.

Republican leaders, top Democrats and President Donald Trump are all claiming big wins in the $400 billion budget agreement signed into law Friday.

Mr Trump tweeted: "Our Military will now be stronger than ever before".

"Costs on non-military lines will never come down if we do not elect more Republicans in the 2018 election, and beyond".

"And while I don't want the government to shut down, I also don't want to keep it open if we're not going to reform it", Paul said.

According to The Washington Post, that figure is U.S. $500,000 million. "We're trying to work with him to help get that done". "It was very disappointing", she said. Sure, people had their issues with the thing-House conservatives like Mark Sanford hated the $300 billion price tag; House Democrats like Nancy Pelosi wanted a commitment from Paul Ryan that he would hold a vote on DACA legislation; and market experts were (and are!) deeply anxious that increasing deficits will further freak out investors.

It passed with a final vote of 240-186. "No, they shouldn't be punished or have it held against them", Pope said.

Carlos Cordeiro elected as US Soccer Federation President

Lawmakers rushed to limit the disruption and impact over the lapse in government funding, voting in the middle of the night to reopen agencies before workers were due to report to the office. He called that decision plus opposition by many Republicans "inhumane and indecent".

The group leader, granted anonymity to speak candidly, said the GOP-controlled government had racked up some good will with the passage of a sweeping tax reform bill late a year ago and by rolling back Obama-era regulations.

The brief shutdown likely won't register for most people.

It's a "Christmas tree on steroids", lamented one of the Freedom Caucus leaders, Rep. Dave Brat (R-Va.).

Corker voted for the recent Republican tax cut after raising similar concerns in the weeks leading up to the vote.

They had cover from Trump, which has proven to be a valuable motivator, given his popularity among conservative base voters. He criticized Democrats for "waste" in the bill. The impacts of this shutdown, which came just weeks after Democrats and a handful of Republicans including Paul refused to support the last continuing resolution but only lasted a weekend, were expected to be minimal - but a path forward for the bill still remained murky in the House.

"It's a budget deal". Under President Obama, GOP leaders touted fiscal restraint and deficit reduction, promising to right the fiscal ship when they regained control of the government.

According to Holler, the group does not have specific plans to run issue advertisements on the bill.

But the administration has said that deporting Dreamers would not be a priority. "This is literally mortgaging our children's future". "Nobody wants to have it pointed out what an eyesore this deal is and how obnoxious it is to conservatives".

Mr Paul brushed off pleas from his fellow Republicans, who billed the budget plan as an "emergency" measure needed for a depleted military.

"Now we have the Republicans, hand in hand with the Democrats, offering us a deficit of a trillion dollars", he added. For some Republicans, the problem was spending, specifically too much of it.
