Rippon and Radford later posed for a picture together, celebrating their impact on the Olympics as out LGBTQ athletes.

"#Olympics #outandproud", Radford tweeted in a response to a tweet saying he was the first openly gay man to ever win a gold medal at the Winter Games.

The sporting world witnessed an important piece of history on Day 3 of the 2018 Olympic Games when Canadian figure skater Eric Radford became the first openly gay male athlete to win Olympic Winter gold.

Alongside him on the podium was Team USA's Adam Rippon, 28, who won bronze in the same event. "Or maybe they just want to get out of their own small town and do something in the world", continued Radford, who skates with Sudbury's Duhamel.

Since the inaugural Women's World Hockey Championships in 1990 every tournament has been won by either the US or Canada. The three Boston College students on Team USA are Cayla Barnes, Kali Flanagan and Megan Keller - all defensemen.


"This is awesome! I literally feel like I might explode with pride", he tweeted Monday when Canada was awarded the gold medal in the team figure skating event.

Others have congratulated the duo, describing their success as 'absolutely incredible'.

After coming out in 2014, Radford worked with the Canadian Olympic Committee on their #OneTeam initiative, developed to reach one million youth in one year by sending Olympians into schools to talk about LGBT issues. He has since continued to build himself a large social media following with this witty postings and LGBTI advocacy.

Adam Rippon - who is also openly gay - was part of an American squad that included: Chris Knierim, Alex Shibutani, Mirai Nagasu, Nathan Chen, Bradie Tennell, Maia Shibutani and Alexa Scimeca Knierim.
