  • US Holocaust Museum Decides To Take Back Award To Burmese Leader Over Ethnic Cleansing Concerns

The United States Holocaust Museum is rescinding a human rights award given to Aung San Suu Kyi, after her failure to intervene in the Rohingya crisis in Myanmar.

Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, was awarded the "Elie Wiesel Award" in 2012 for resisting the country's military dictatorship, including serving 15 years of house arrest.

Myanmar's civilian government, led by former democracy activist Aung San Suu Kyi, lacks control over the military but has been castigated by rights groups for failing to speak out in defence of the Rohingya.

The National League for Democracy, under your leadership, has instead refused to cooperate with United Nations investigators, promulgated hateful rhetoric against the Rohingya community, and denied access to and cracked down on journalists trying to uncover the scope of the crimes in Rakhine State.

"We did not take this decision lightly", a letter by the museum that was posted on its website Wednesday said, the Times of Israel reported.

Understanding her situation, the Museum authorities mentioned, "We understand the hard situation you must face ..." "The severity of the atrocities in recent months demand that you use your moral authority to address this situation". "Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented".

The US has condemned the brutality.

The Holocaust museum encouraged Aung San Suu Kyi to cooperate with United Nations efforts to examine and prevent the campaign, and to grant the Rohingya citizenship and full rights, which they do not have. Myanmar has denied citizenship to Rohingya since 1982 and excludes them from the 135 ethnic groups it officially recognizes, which effectively renders them stateless.

"You can expand access for both local and worldwide aid workers to administer life-saving assistance".

While the majority of those refugees fled Myanmar a year ago, Rohingya are still streaming across the border by the hundreds every week.

About 700,000 Rohingya have fled over the border to Bangladesh since the violence erupted in August, bringing with them consistent testimony of murder, rape and arson by soldiers and vigilante mobs. Her party won a landslide victory in 2015 and she assumed the newly created post of state counsellor, although the military still retains significant political and economic power.

At least 9,000 Rohingya were killed in Rakhine state from August 25 to September 24, according to Doctors without Borders.

Underlining the widespread and systematic violence against the Rohingya, Gilmour said: "The Government of Myanmar is busy telling the world that it is ready to receive Rohingya returnees, while at the same time its forces are continuing to drive them into Bangladesh".

Hundreds of Rohingya villages were torched, and recent satellite imagery showed at least 55 villages have since been completely bulldozed, removing all traces of buildings, wells and vegetation.

The museum said it hoped that she would have stood up for the Rohingya, who have faced oppression in Myanmar for so long, and done something to stop the genocide.
