The Chicago Bears had a serious choice to make on free agent-to-be Kyle Fuller.

The transition tag will pay Fuller $12.971 million for the 2018 season, as opposed to the $14.975 million he would have received under the franchise tag.

His 2017 Pro Football Focus grade was an 84.3, putting him as the NFL's No. 22 cornerback, with an "above average" standing. That right of refusal gives the Bears the upper hand and will likely keep any teams from even entering into negotiations for Fuller knowing it could be time wasted on the free agent market while other options are being snatched up by competing teams. The tagging club is awarded no compensation if it chooses not to match.

Ryan Pace said at the NFL Combine that the Chicago Bears were going to be aggressive with the Kyle Fuller situation, and on Tuesday, the general manager made his move.

He also paid tribute to the late Philip Seymour Hoffman , ending his speech by saying, "This is for my old buddy Phil Hoffman ". The film was directed by Martin McDonagh and has already picked up the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture.

Fuller was a first-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and had a pair of interceptions as part of a strong 2017 season after missing all of 2016 with a knee injury.

By using the tag, the Bears have until July 16 to work out a multiyear deal with Fuller, which seems to be their intention.

However the Bears do it, they know they need to keep Fuller or risk adding cornerback to the list of positions already in need of upgrade in the offseason. But, after being called out by defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Fuller bounced back with his best season. The following year, Fuller once again played a full 16-game regular-season, tallying 54 stops in all, two interceptions and nine pass defenses.
