A 15-hour standoff with a man accused of fatally shooting a California police officer and injuring another comes to an end.

Officers pursued the suspect, who fired through the door, shooting one of the officers, Los Angeles Sheriff Jim McDonnell said.

The two officers were shot while responding to a call around 9 the 1400 block of South Palomares Street, in Pomona, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Los Angeles County sheriff's Capt. Christopher Bergner says the suspect remained barricaded Saturday morning in an apartment building in Pomona, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.

"However, the suspect failed to yield, and a vehicle pursuit ensued".

Bergner says the man had led police on a pursuit Friday night before he crashed the vehicle and fled on foot.

He got emotional when asked about the Pomona PD officer who was killed in the line of duty Friday night and said he "pushed through for him".

That suspect locked himself in a bedroom, then started firing through the door.

He allegedly opened fire on the officers about 9:10 p.m. Authorities said he was booked on suspicion of murder of a police officer and attempted murder of other peace officers.

As KABC reported, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck was one of many to honor Casillas's service. Casillas was finishing his field training when he was killed Friday night, KTLA reported.

Casillas had been with the Pomona Police Department since 2014. Cirrito's Run to Remember will raise money for repairs to a memorial for fallen officers.

After Casillas' death, colleagues expressed gratitude for the widespread condolences. One of the residents at the scene said he knows the gunman and described him as a father of three who is battling depression.

"Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of our brother, Officer Gregg Casillas", the department's Twitter page said.

He leaves behind a wife and two small children. He was being held without bail.
