In Spain, Women Launch Nationwide Feminist Strike Protesting "Alliance of Patriarchy & Capitalism"

WOMEN from across Spain took the streets of cities up and down the country to take part in the first feminist strike to mark International Women's Day.

In France, officials touted a planned crackdown on companies violating gender-equal pay policies, and in Russian Federation, a powerful legislator issued an apology to women he sexually harassed.

While Spain is seeing some of the largest walkouts, women in many other countries around the world were also on strike Thursday. Filipino women rallied in Manila to protest the policies of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte.

Mr Duterte has come under fire from rights groups for making rape jokes and he said last month that he had ordered soldiers to shoot female insurgents in the genitals.

Pakistani women have largely been deprived of their rights since the country gained independence in 1947. Black glasses covered part of her badly burned face.

In Afghanistan, hundreds of women, who would have been afraid to leave their homes during Taliban rule, gathered in the capital to commemorate the day.

In Spain, major unions estimated that 5.3 million people joined the strike, which targeted gender violence and unequal pay.

The difference in the proposals caused controversies regarding what is "allowed" during a day of protests.

Teresa Sonsur, a 38-year-old social services agency worker, said she wanted to end workplace discrimination.

There they delivered white and red roses to the mothers, sisters and wives of the accused, in protest of the aforementioned strategy, which they described as a violation of women's rights.

"If you want to fight, why don't you look for a fellow man and fight", Museveni asked, calling domestic abusers cowards.

Around the world, events were held to push for progress on gender equality and in the fight against sexual harassment.

Asked about the difference between Spain and the United Kingdom in terms of gender relations, she said: "I'm not sure if Spain is less equal than the United Kingdom but it does feel slightly more behind the times in general, so I suppose that includes gender equality as well".
