LSU scientists 'discover' 1.5 million penguins on Antarctic isles

  • Amazing drone pics reveal MILLIONS of penguins in Antarctic 'mega-colonies'

What's insane is that before this, no one really thought the remote rocky chain of islands off the Antarctic Peninsula's northwestern tip was home to penguins - let alone 1.5 million of them.

According to experts, more than 1.5 million Adelie penguins have now been found on the Danger Islands.

Scientists had theorised the decline was linked to reductions in sea-ice, which is an important habitat for krill, the small crustaceans that form a key part of the penguin diet. This discovery means these islands include the third and fourth largest Adélie penguin colonies in the world.

When the team got to the islands, they found thousands of penguins nesting at the landing site.

Dr Hart told The Telegraph "This is the biggest colony discovered recently". Scientifically, while this is a huge number of "new" penguins, they are only new to science.

The team published its findings online Friday in the Scientific Reports journal.

A previously unknown "supercolony" of penguins has been discovered off of the Antarctic Peninsula's northern tip.

National Football League trade rumors: Rams sending DE Robert Quinn to Dolphins
The Dolphins would take a $22 million dead cap hit by releasing Suh, and save only $3.9 million against the cap. Quinn had been with the Rams since 2011 when the team made him the 14th overall pick in the NFL Draft .

Lynch and her team "then went and looked at higher resolution commercial imagery to confirm the guano staining that our algorithms had picked up in the Landsat imagery", she said.

She said that among the reasons why these supercolonies have been undetected for decades are the remoteness of the islands and the treacherous waters surrounding them.

Researchers believe the Danger Islands will be an important breeding location for penguins under projected climate change, and that they deserve special consideration in the negotiation and design of Marine Protected Areas in the region.

Evidence of the penguins' existence first emerged in data from Landsat Earth-monitoring satellites, which are run by NASA and the US Geological Survey. Using neural network analysis of drone images they took of the colony, the scientists were able to determine the size of the population, as well as how changing temperatures and sea ice are impacting the island ecosystem.

In 2015, researchers from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) undertook an investigation to explore the Danger Islands after satellite images of the area showed off a lot of guano that, based on their then-current understanding of the terrain, shouldn't be present.

The discovery cements the idea that climate change was behind the decline of penguin populations on the western side of the peninsula, Polito said.

"The timing of this research is really fortuitous because the marine protected areas were proposed before", Polito said.
