  • Olympian Mikaela Shiffrin wins second straight World Cup overall title

However, Shiffrin wrapped up the title in style by winning the race, edging Wendy Holdener of Switzerland by 0.09 seconds.

American ski queen Mikaela Shiffrin claimed her second successive overall women's World Cup title after finishing third in the giant slalom in Ofterschwang on Friday.

"It was a pretty tight race, so it was not easy to go into the second run and think, 'Oh, yeah, I'm fine, ' and to just ski", Shiffrin said. Olympic champion Frida Hansdotter of Sweden was 0.72 behind in third, and Vlhova finished fourth.

Austria's Annemarie Moser-Proell won her 41st race aged 21 in 1975 before missing the following season to care for her father.

Vonn, who did not compete in the Ofterschwang tech events, is trying to pad her overall women's record of 81 career World Cup wins as she's chases the all-time mark of 86 held by Sweden's Ingemar Stenmark.

The 22-year-old secured back-to-back crystal globes following giant slalom gold at the Pyeongchang Olympics last month.

In making Friday's podium behind Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel and Germany's Viktoria Rebensburg Shiffrin moved into an unassailable lead in the overall standings.

"For sure I have a big lead", Shiffrin said. "Hopefully, I'm not going to be feeling a lot of nerves (in Are) because there is not a lot of risk".

The slalom specialist has won the World Cup title every season since 2012-2013 apart from 2016 when she was hampered by a knee injury.
