Representatives for Bailey and the Academy did not immediately return EW's requests for comment.

Cinematographer John Bailey, 75, is facing three separate harassment claims, United States news outlet Variety claimed.

"The Academy's goal is not to be an investigative body, but rather ensure that when a grievance is made, it will go through a fair and methodical process", CEO Dawn Hudson said in an email sent to members. In October, the Academy voted to expel Harvey Weinstein less than 10 days after the New York Times first reported on his history of sexual harassment.

The latest in a string of public relations crises to hit the academy in recent years, the accusations against Bailey come as the group itself has been navigating the sexual misconduct scandals that have reverberated across the entertainment industry in recent months, sparking the Time's Up movement that loomed large over this year's awards season up to and including the recent Oscar telecast.

In December, the Academy established a code of conduct which provides that members may be disciplined or expelled for abuse, harassment or discrimination.

If proved true, the standards specify that AMPAS could " a. Inform the Board of remedial measures that don't require Board approval; or c. The allegations must be substantiated by evidence, and will be subject to a review by the academy's membership committee.

One of those Board of Governors members who would be part of such a vote is Bailey's wife, Carol Littleton, from the Film Editors branch.

Bailey was elected president of the institution in August.

Bailey has worked as a cinematographer for more than 40 years.

If Bailey decides to step down, he would be replaced by Academy Vice President Lois Burwell, a make-up artist, until the next election in July.
