If she survives this perilous adventure, it could be the making of her, earning her the name tomb raider. The Tomb Raider devs did a better job in Rise of the Tomb Raider, but I want even more. She doesn't sound English, let alone the fake, plummy English that her predecessor Angelina Jolie perfected with her tongue firmly in her cheek. As is the case with Lara, the film's main players are cardboard personalities that would be otherwise forgettable were it not for the performances behind them. Uthaug and his cinematographer George Richmond (the Kingsman movies) shoot much of the film's action and fight scenes in quick-cutting closeups, giving the movie a fittingly Jason Bourne-esque rough and tumble style.
Interestingly, the reveal looks to land on the day before the upcoming Tomb Raider film's USA release, so Square Enix may be trying to drive up hype for the blockbuster with the announcement. Thanks to one key difference, Vikander's Lara becomes much more relatable than her video game counterpart, even for what is at base an action-adventure romp.
If Tomb Raider hasn't aged particularly well, it still holds a special place in the pantheon of video game movies-which is a little like being the most distinguished pile of garbage, but still. Lara Croft (Alicia Vikander) as a penniless but quick-witted bike courier is endearing and entertaining, and here, on the streets of London, the movie gives us its best action sequence and does its best building of Lara's character.
