In the video, Lonnie Seifert, the New Prague High School principal in New Prague, Minnesota, is seen confronting the student holding the sign and telling him he needed permission from the school 24 hours in advance to carry the sign.

"We didn't hear of any schools or students participating (in the walkout), but we were hearing from our school communities, 'What could we do, what could we offer in support of lessening gun violence?'" RaeNell Houston, superintendent of Catholic schools in New Orleans, told the Clarion Herald.

A group of Houghton High School, students organized the 17-minute walkout at Houghton, which drew about 100 students from seventh through 12th grades.

Blackman was not penalized by his school for taking part in the student activism ignited by the survivors of the shooting that occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, in February. The bill would take away guns from those who show signs they may hurt themselves or others.

Following the massacre, the activist organization Women's March urged students across the country to take a stand by assembling outside at 10 a.m. Students were urged to observe 17 minutes of silence, one each for the victims.

"We have a voice, we have the power to make our school and community a safer, kinder place. This is up to us".

"We are not a minority", one boy said.

'Enough Is Enough': US Students Stage Walkouts Against Guns

"It was scary past year when we thought we actually had a shooter on campus and we all had to go on lockdown and we didn't know for at least 20 minutes if there was an actual shooter". "I think they're the future".

"The day that it has to be passed by is April, so that's why we're out here now".

While Wednesday's walkout attracted just a handful of people who stopped by to observe their vigil, participants said they were grateful to the people who braved the cold and winds. "They are bleeding. They are all going to die", a teenage girl calling from classroom 1215 said through tears and heavy breathing. They actually went against gun violence, not the right to own guns.

At MNPS, we respect the right of our students to advocate for causes that are important to them. But I'm very hopeful that when the government sees all of these voices all around the nation they start to realize how much they need to push for this.

"Us students are exhausted of going to school in fear that we won't make it out safe or even alive", she said.

The group encouraged students, teachers, school administrators and parents to take part in the protest; and is now organizing another walkout event for April 20, organizers wrote on twitter.

According to Marshfield High School's Principal Travis Howard there were around 75 kids who participated in the protest.
