Gov. Jay Inslee, Federal Communications Commission has signed on a bill of protecting the open internet in Washington, after three months of state leader promised for safeguard over net-neutrality rules. Violations would be enforceable under the state's Consumer Protection Act. He further added taking swipe at president Trump for allegedly favoring corporates, "a clear case of the Trump administration favoring powerful corporate interests over the interests of millions of Washingtonians and Americans". That follows more than two dozen lawsuits from USA state attorneys general, not to mention a number of Executive Orders from state governors mandating net neutrality. Internet service providers said they weren't necessary, and could restrict the expansion of faster internet into underserved areas. It's unclear when Oregon's measure would be signed into law.

The Internet Association, a lobbying group representing tech giants like Google, Amazon, and Facebook, is not directly suing the FCC, but will still file arguments in other lawsuits against the FCC as an "intervener".

With the move, Washington became the first state in the country to require all broadband providers to adhere to open Internet regulations. "Yet somehow, as if by magic, that same statute gives them the authority to preempt state attempts to regulate standards of conduct on the internet".

Washington is the first state to pass a bill which protects net neutrality.

The state legislators revealed House Bill 2282, after speaking about whether or not Net Neutrality would have to remain in place via executive order.

The companies claim they will be directly harmed when the FCC net neutrality rollback goes into effect, which will likely happen by the end of April.

The FCC's new rules are not expected to go into effect until later this spring.

Big telecom companies have said net neutrality rules could undermine investment in broadband and introduce uncertainty about what are acceptable business practices.

"This is a flawless example of why you need states' assistance when you've had the federal government walk off the job and go to the donut shop", Inslee said. With federal authorities moving in the opposite direction, do states have any leeway to implement their own rules?
