  • Apple said Monday it had achieved a goal of

Renewable energy projects that provide power to Apple facilities range from large wind farms in the U.S. to clusters of hundreds of rooftop solar systems in Japan and Singapore. The company says it's now running 25 renewable energy projects globally, with 15 more in the process of being built. This is the largest percentage of renewable energy used by any resort in Las Vegas, and an industry first for a gaming operator in Nevada, the release said. It's not just solar, either: there are also wind farms, biogas fuel cells, and micro-hydro generation, along with various energy storage technologies to actually save that electricity until it's required. 23 such suppliers have agreed to commit to all of their Apple production with clean energy, Apple claims.

Finisar, a United States industry-leading producer of optical communication components and vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs), which power some of Apple's most popular new features like Face ID, Portrait mode selfies and Animoji.

Apple announced on Monday that its facilities around the world were now entirely powered by renewable energy. At Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, a 17-megawatt solar panel installation on the roof and biogas fuel cells bring in clean energy.

Since it is not yet possible to power a company the size of Google entirely by renewable energy, the search giant has made a decision to "match" its energy usage by purchasing renewable energy from local wind and solar farms. Google had purchased a sizeable amount of renewable energy in 2017 to cover all of its electricity consumption world-wide.

Since 2011, Apple's joint clean energy projects have reduced carbon emissions by 54 per cent across global facilities.

The software company now has 25 working global projects. Apple's biggest link in the supply chain, Foxconn, has yet to sign up.

Apple now has 25 operational renewable energy projects around the world, totalling 626 megawatts of generation capacity, with 286 megawatts of solar PV generation coming online in 2017.

There is a long way to go.
