Justin Hayward, the band's lead vocalist, guitarist and composer, said the band is honored to be "in the home of our heroes". A tribute to Simone included singers Lauryn Hill and Andra Day with backing from the Roots.

A classically-trained pianist, Simone is often referred to as "The High Priestess of Soul". "She influenced the influencers". He said he always protected Simone, and continues to do so. "This is really more about a group of people more than one person, it's a collective, a brotherhood and that's something that needs acknowledging tonight".

Simone died in 2003. Her brother, Sam Waymon, accepted the induction on his sister's behalf. But while he was excited about the Rock Hall honors, Ocasek downplayed the chance for a future Cars album without Benjamin Orr.

The band clearly loved the speech, laughing hysterically in the audience.

So did the two talk about anything while she was on stage? And then at one point he said "sorry gotta go".

Illsley did compliment Knopfler for writing music that made the band "stand out from the crowd".

Sambora, who left the New Jersey band in 2013, and Alec John Such, who left in 1994, embraced their former bandmates after each spoke onstage to accept the honor.
