Seven inmates were killed and 17 others were injured in an incident at Lee Correctional Institution in Bishopville, South Carolina, authorities said.

Hours after the violence started, no correctional officers or medical personnel had attended to the dead or dying, he said.

"South Carolina prison officials have been grandstanding and trying to get the FCC to do something about cellphones in their prisons - which I think is a tacit admission that they can't control the corruption among their guards; they're actually not focusing on core safety issues", Wright told Loud & Clear.

The first fight started in a dorm about 7:15 p.m. Sunday and appeared to be contained before suddenly breaking out in two other dorms.

The correctional institution was opened in 1993 and it houses 1,500 offenders - all male who include some of the most violent offenders of the state.

Allen states he learned about the morale issues while visiting prisons following the deadly attack at Kirkland previous year and expects to follow up on their investigation after this latest riot at Lee.

The Bishopville correctional institution has in fact seen the most number of deaths than any prison in SC in the recent years.

In February, one inmate killed another at the prison.

The prison is about 50 miles east of Columbia.

SCDC said the prison was secured at 2:55 a.m. and no staff members or officers were injured.
