  • 35 sick from E. Coli outbreak traced to romaine lettuce

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is investigating whether romaine lettuce is the source of an E. coli outbreak. A list of the states and the number of cases in each can be found on the Case Count Map page.

In a press release Friday, the Arizona Department of Health Services stated three cases in the state were also tied to this multistate outbreak. Ill people range in age from 12 to 84 years, with a median age of 29. The total people who all fell ill, from those about 69 percent of ill people are female. Till now, no deaths have been reported.

In 2016, officials said flour produced at a General Mills facility in Missouri may have infected as many as 63 people from two dozen states with E. coli. Resturants and distributors should ask the source of the chopped romaine lettuce from their suppliers in order to know from where this chopped romaine lettuce comes. However, illnesses can start anywhere from 1 to 10 days after exposure. This percentage is significantly higher than results from a survey [787 KB] of healthy people in which 46% reported eating romaine lettuce in the week before they were interviewed.

Facebook facing class action suit over facial recognition tech
Facebook might think it's facing enough problems right now, but the company's about to run into another privacy-related headache. A Facebook spokesperson said the company is "reviewing the ruling " and continues to believe "the case has no merit".

"Consumer Reports' experts believe that it could be hard for consumers to determine where the romaine they purchase is from, which is why they believe it's best to avoid the lettuce altogether", Consumer Reports said in a release. The restaurants used to have bagged, chopped romaine lettuce in order to make the salads. Romaine grown elsewhere and other forms of romaine, such as whole heads or hearts, are not believed to have been contaminated, according to a joint statement from industry leaders.

Consumer Reports said it would be hard for buyers to tell where the romaine was grown, which is why they are saying consumers should avoid romaine altogether until the threat passes.

Amid the outbreak, CDC continues to warn consumers to avoid consuming store-bought chopped romaine over concerns they may have purchased contaminated lettuce. Some reported illnesses occurred after consumers ate lettuce from casual restaurants.
