Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg will strike a conciliatory tone on Tuesday in testimony before Congress in an attempt to blunt possible regulatory fallout from the privacy scandal engulfing his social network.

On Tuesday, the company's CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, will be testifying before US lawmakers to explain what happened with the information harvested by Cambridge Analytica.

How will I know if my information was taken? On Monday, Facebook started to inform users who had been impacted in the Cambridge Analytica scandal that their personal information had potentially been compromised by the firm.

In his written remarks, Zuckerberg called Facebook "an idealistic and optimistic company", and said: "We focused on all the good that connecting people can bring".

"But it's clear now that we didn't do enough to prevent these tools from being used for harm as well", Zuckerberg says in his prepared testimony.

Zuckerberg goes on to detail how Facebook intertwined with the election interference and misuse of private data, even lending support to legislation to prevent a repetition of Russian ads aimed at other voters.

Facebook's logo appears on screens at the Nasdaq MarketSite in New York's Times Square, on March 29, 2018.

A day before the hearings, a suit-clad Zuckerberg sought to make the rounds on Capitol Hill, huddling with the very lawmakers who planned to grill him.

Facebook said CA's acquisition of Facebook data via the app developed by Aleksandr Kogan and his firm Global Science Research Ltd happened without its authorization and was an explicit violation of its platform policies.

According to Reuters, the Facebook chief held a series of meetings with some USA lawmakers ahead of his multiple Capitol Hill appearances.

Nelson said he has asked the Congressional leadership to to haul Cambridge Analytica in to answer questions at a separate hearing.

"And when we address these challenges, I know well look back and view helping people connect and giving more people a voice as a positive force in the world", Zuckerberg said.

"Our goals are to understand Facebook's impact on upcoming elections - like Brazil, India, Mexico and the USA midterms - and to inform our future product and policy decisions", Elliot Schrage, Vice President of Communications and Public Policy, and David Ginsberg, Director of Research at Facebook, said in a blog post.

For hearings a year ago about Russia's alleged use of social media to influence American politics, Facebook, Twitter Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google sent lawyers, angering lawmakers.

The White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said the administration is looking forward to his testimony. This has raised concerns about how the company safeguards the privacy of its users.
