Iphone's "Touchless gesture" technology under development

  • You're not crazy: The Instagram app just disappeared from Apple Watch

A new report by Bloomberg indicates that feature iPhones will ship with "touchless gesture controls" which would allow iPhone users to "perform some tasks by moving their finger close to the screen without actually tapping it".

According to a Bloomberg report this morning, the company is developing two new technologies for its smartphone that could significantly change the user experience.

Apple releases new versions of iPhones every year, topping themselves each time with the innovations introduced in the newer models. Apple is still in the early development stages with those technologies. It is at least a year away but could offer a wow-factor to enhance Apple's current market cap of $854 million. At that price, we're talking just under 3x the estimated cost (IHS) of the display for the iPhone X. Back when including everything but the kitchen sink in phones was a thing, Samsung allowed users to control their Galaxy S devices by doing things like waving their hand over the display to scroll.

A number of matchups at this year's WrestleMania could go either way, but these are the top three with the biggest bust potential. She's an extremely gifted athlete, a former college volleyball player, and has her dad's skills with a microphone in her hand.

Apple did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

As for other new discoveries in iOS 11.4 beta, there is again reference to HomePod Stereo Pairing, but it doesn't work for now, until a beta version of software arrives for Apple's smart speaker. Google's ATAP research group has been working this sort of technology, too, through its Project Soli program. It has been working on two 5.85-inch and 6.46-inch OLED screens together with Samsung Display.

Apple is by no means the first company to consider curved screens or touchless gestures. This feature used a motion sensor on the phone's bezel instead of being built into the display. After all, Apple's said to be sourcing most of its OLED technology from the South Korean giant anyway. Unlike Android's, mostly rudimentary face unlock - a glorified picture match - Apple crammed an IR blaster that made the shape and nuances of your face the unlock button.
