  • Jaguar Land Rover to cut jobs and production – and to blame Brexit

"We are however continuing to recruit large numbers of highly skilled engineers, graduates and apprentices as we over-proportionally invest in new products and technologies".

JLR said in January that it would cut production numbers at its Halewood plant due to slowing new vehicle sales, which a company spokesman linked to "concern around the future of petrol and diesel engines" and "general global economic and political uncertainty".

Production is to be cut at two of the carmaker's plants in the United Kingdom, with an official announcement to be made on Monday. The jobs will be lost from the Solihull and Castle Bromwich factory sites.

Solihull is home to the Jaguar XE, the Range Rover, the Land Rover Discovery and the Range Rover Sport, and now employs over 10,000 people.

British new auto registrations have been falling for a year which the vehicle industry body has partly blamed on weakening consumer confidence in the wake of the Brexit vote, after record demand in 2015 and 2016.

The luxury carmaker said the "review" of its production schedules is being undertaken to ensure market demand is balanced globally and that it will lay out its 2018-19 production plans to the workforce on Monday.

Warmest of 2018 before rain and storms reload for the weekend!
The first round, or window of opportunity to see severe storms, will be in the afternoon hours along and ahead of the dryline. Lingering showers can't be ruled out through the afternoon, but rain should be ending altogether by Saturday evening.

"We also remain committed to our United Kingdom plants, in which we have invested more than £4 billion since 2010 to futureproof manufacturing technologies to deliver new models".

Latest employee figures say there are 3,200 people employed at the Castle Bromwich site and a further 10,000 at Solihull.

A source told new agency Reuters that 1,000 roles would be slashed as part of the moves.

"It's unfortunate that in the United Kingdom demand is not there anymore, and the United Kingdom is our home market".

Jaguar sales are down 26 percent so far this year whilst Land Rover demand dropped 20 percent in its home market as buyers shun diesel, concerned over planned tax rises and possible bans and restrictions in several countries. Over 90 per cent of the company's United Kingdom sales are from diesel vehicles.
