Macron Says He Has Proof Of Syria 'Chemical Attack'

  • French President Emmanuel Macron says

Despite soaring tensions with Russia, Macron stressed the need to "talk to everyone" in pursuing a Syrian settlement, saying his plans to visit Moscow in May remain unchanged. "Innocence is not allowed". "The armed intervention of this night shows our determination", he wrote.

US Defence Secretary James Mattis said the strikes were a "one-time shot" to send a clear message to Assad and his "murderous lieutenants".

Macron's tough statement also contrasted with remarks by major European partners.

For the moment, public opinion polls in France suggest that a plurality of citizens are skeptical of carrying out a strike on Syria.

"We can not tolerate the normalization of the use of chemical weapons", he said in a statement issued shortly after huge explosions were heard in Syria's capital early Saturday followed by the sound of airplanes overhead.

"We have proof that last week, now 10 days ago, that chemical weapons were used, at least with chlorine, and that they were used by the regime of (President) Bashar al-Assad", Macron said in televised comments on Thursday, though he did not provide any details about the nature of the evidence or how it was acquired.

US, allied strikes aimed at Syria's chemical weapons
The U.S. has vowed to also squeeze Syria's allies Russian Federation and Iran. The United States and its satellites are trying to undermine worldwide law.

"When you fix red lines, if you don't know how to make sure they are respected, you're choosing to be weak", Macron himself told The Guardian last June.

He added, "NATO considers the use of chemical weapons as a threat to worldwide peace and security, and believes that it is essential to protect the Chemical Weapons Convention", which Syria signed in 2013, leading to a ban in the country on the manufacture or use of such weapons. Simultaneously macron reiterated that it wants to avoid "escalation".

France's participation in the US -led military operation in Syria has sparked fierce debate at home. The British government now estimates 75 people were killed in the incident. Both leaders affirmed that our joint airstrikes were successful and necessary to deter Assad from any further use of chemical weapons.

British lawmakers voted down taking military action against Damascus in 2013, in what was widely viewed as an assertion of parliamentary sovereignty on the use of force. The Syrian government has repeatedly denied any use of banned weapons.

She added, "This is not about intervening in a civil war".

"The strikes against Syria are without proof, without a United Nations mandate, and against it, without a European agreement and without a vote of the French Parliament", Melenchon said on Twitter.
