The recall is the largest of eggs in the US since 2010, when more than 550 million eggs were recalled from two Iowa farms, according to the website Food Safety News.

A recall of 206,749,248 eggs has occurred in the USA, following 22 reports of illness linked to salmonella contamination.

The eggs come from Rose Acre Farms, located in Seymour.

In 2010, a salmonella outbreak sickened hundreds and led to the recall of half a billion eggs.

"Consumers with these eggs shouldn't eat them", FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb said on Twitter.

Eggs from the North Carolina farm were sold to restaurants and in supermarkets under multiple brand names, including Coburn Farms, Country Daybreak, Food Lion, Glenview, Great Value, Nelms and Sunshine Farms.

The eggs "have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella Braenderup, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems", the company said Friday.

Consumers who have purchased shells eggs are urged to immediately stop using and return them to the store where purchased for a full refund. Twenty-two illnesses have been reported. Healthy individuals can experience fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

According to the FDA, those states include Florida, Colorado, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia through retail stores and restaurants via direct delivery.
