  • DICT calls on Facebook to build local data centers

Facebook shares ended higher in the US Monday, as the social media giant shared a post on why it collects the data of non-Facebook users, following a testimony in front of US congress in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica data scandal.

As per some reports over the web, David Baser, who is Facebook's Product Management Director, has given a clarification regarding the company's tracking practices along with data usage.

Suppose you are using any other website or app, most likely that website would be using one of the Facebook services be it the social plugins, Facebook logins, Facebook Analytics or Facebook ads and measurement tools.

According to Facebook, the information it receives can include the name of the website or app, your IP address, your browser, what operating system you use and whether you've visited the third-party site before.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg testifies before a joint hearing of the Commerce and Judiciary Committees on Capitol Hill in Washington, Tuesday, April 10, 2018, about the use of Facebook data to target American voters in the 2016 election.

Facebook believes this model, which the company describes as providing explicit consent, will allow it to avoid the concerns that were previously raised by the Irish data protection commissioner.

Other companies, including Twitter (NYSE:TWTR), Pinterest and LinkedIn (NASDAQ:MSFT) have similar setups, Facebook says. When an internet user clicks on one of those ads that can pop up on a variety of websites, then a cookie placed on that ad makes some basic user data available to Facebook.

"Google has a popular analytics service". These and many other companies offer advertising services too.

"We want to protect out users' data from malicious abuse of trust", the company wrote in a blog post. Depending on a user's settings and what he or she has permitted, Facebook can also listen in to conversations via a mobile phone's microphone.

"Facebook Audience Network enables other websites and apps to show ads from Facebook advertisers".

Facebook is trying to demystify the ways in which it tracks people when they aren't directly using the website or app.

For his part, Zuckerberg said the trip would help him "personally hear" more voices in America, and would "help me lead the work at Facebook and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative so we can make a positive impact as the world enters an important new period".

Most of the political ads about divisive issues that ran on Facebook Inc (FB.O) before the 2016 United States presidential election were sponsored by "suspicious groups" with no publicly available information about them, according to a study released on Monday and based on a database of five million ads on Facebook. "We also get information about which website or app you're using, which is necessary to know when to provide our tools".
