Pentagon admits strike does not rule out possible future Syria chemical attacks

  • Britain France say they joined strikes on Syria

In conjunction with British and French soldiers, the US military carried out the strikes on three sites, a scientific research center near Damascus and two chemical weapons storage facilities near Homs.

Russian lawmakers met with Assad after the United States, France and Britain launched missile strikes on Syria in retaliation for a suspected poison gas attack a week ago.

France is urging Russia to join in renewed peace efforts after Western missile strikes on Syria aimed at punishing Bashar Assad for an alleged chemical attack, while the Syrian leader was said to have appeared unfazed Sunday in a meeting with Russian politicians.

Much like USA statements, Britain's foreign secretary Boris Johnson said there are no plans to launch additional military strikes against Syria, but that his country and its allies will consider further action if Assad uses chemical weapons against his people in the future. Calling the three-nation attacks an "act of aggression" against Syria, Russia has even issued a statement suggesting that retaliatory steps will be taken.

Senior Russian military officials said on Saturday that Syria's air defenses, which are mostly made up of Soviet-era systems, had shot down 71 of the Western missiles.

Following the bombing campaign, Syrian TV quickly released video of an unphased Assad casually walking through a building.

The move follows an alleged chemical attack on the city of Douma that killed up to 75 people.

President Donald Trump "enforces" the red line and the USA will sustain the pressure on the war-torn nation, she said.

U.S. envoy Haley also said that if Trump draws the red line, he enforces it and the USA will continue to sustain pressure on Syria.

Haley's comments come just one day after the US, UK, and France carried out a massive missile strike on Syrian targets.

Syria says it had given up its chemical weapons in 2013. "We've spent a week talking about the unique horror of chemical weapons".

In a news conference that took place on Saturday morning Pentagon Chief officials said they can't speculate on what will happen next.

The strike came almost a week after an apparent chemical attack took the lives of dozens of Syrian civilians in the rebel-held city of Douma.

"So far, thank heavens, the Assad regime has not been so foolish to launch another chemical weapons attack", he said, adding that Britain and its allies "would study what the options were" in the event of another attack.

Haley said the United States successfully hit the heart of Syria's chemical weapons enterprise, and because of these actions, it is confident that it has crippled Syria's chemical weapons programme.

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Saturday that the strikes had been carried out in violation of norms and principles of the worldwide law.

"Important infrastructure was destroyed which will result in a setback for the Syrian regime".

Speaking on the BBC on April 15, British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said that the strikes were about saying "enough is enough" over what he called the "barbaric" use of chemical weapons. Missiles fired from warships and jets hit a scientific facility in the vicinity of Damascus, which the coalition claimed was involved in the production of chemical and biological weapons, as well as a former missile base west of Homs and Al-Dumayr air base east of the Syrian capital.

Syria condemned the attack as a "flagrant violation of the worldwide law", according to Syria's official SANA news agency.
