  • Lahore High Court bans broadcast of Nawaz Sharif's anti-judiciary speeches for 15 days

PTI Central Information Secretary Fawad Chaudhry said that the court has awakened the regulator, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regularity Authority (PEMRA) through its decision.

A sou motu has been taken by the Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar on Lahore High Court's decision to bar Pemra from transmission of anti-judiciary speeches by former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and leaders of their party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

The accused including former premier Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam and son-in-law Captain (r) Safdar also appeared before the court.

A three-member bench headed by Justice Mazahir Ali Naqvi also directed PEMRA to decide all pending complaints regarding the alleged contemptuous speeches within 15 days and devise a framework.

As many as three corruption references had been filed against the Sharif family, on the directives of the top court which pertain to the Al-Azizia Steel Mills and Hill Metal Establishment, offshore companies including Flagship Investment Ltd, and Avenfield properties of London.

The case of the Sharif family's upscale London flats is based on a reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on the Supreme Court's directives a year ago. Sharif has dismissed the corruption charges as politically motivated. If convicted, he can be jailed.

Earlier, nearly all the media outlets yesterday [April-16, 2017] aired the news that LHC had slapped a 15-day ban on airing on airing anti-judiciary speeches of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and other PMLN leaders.

"I can not believe that court reporters gave this incorrect news, who was it that made changes to the actual news?" the chief justice said while expressing dissatisfaction on the way the media outlets carried the news. "The judges acted as lawyers of Imran Khan and they were party against Nawaz Sharif".

"If they are not stopped they will continue attacking the judiciary", the petitioner said, requesting the court to initiate contempt of court proceedings against the respondents under the Contempt of Court Ordinance, 2003, read with Article 204 of the Constitution. "Instead of taking action, Pemra sought advice from judiciary".
