  • Woman alleges in new lawsuit 3 Michigan State basketball players sexually assaulted her

A Michigan State student was raped by three basketball players in 2015 and coerced by the university into not reporting it, according to a new lawsuit.

One of the players then pulled her into a bedroom and told her "you are mine for the night".

Attorney Karen Truszkowski says that the victim never reported the rape but would not comment further. Three former football players pleaded guilty last week to reduced charges in the 2017 sexual assault of a woman in an apartment bathroom. She also did not file a no-contact order and claims she was not advised by the university's counselors of that option.

On the evening of April 11, 2015, the student and her roommate were at a bar in East Lansing when members of the basketball team walked in, the suit alleges. One of the players offered to buy her a drink and asked if she would like to meet "other guys" from the team. She then called another friend who lived in Brody, named Jane Roe 2 in the lawsuit.

"When plaintiff disclosed to the counselor that the three attackers were notable MSU athletes on the basketball team, the counselor suddenly announced to the plaintiff that she needed another person in the room with her and the plaintiff".

When the alleged victim saw JR1, she found out JR1 did not know about the party and that JR1 was searching for her but could not find her. The players invited her to a party at an off-campus apartment, allegedly telling her that her roommate was already on her way there, and she accepted a ride to the party. "There was no party" the lawsuit stated, "as few people were present".

When she arrived at the apartment, she realized her roommate was not there.

"Plaintiff was feeling discombobulated".

The student had not shown any romantic interest in any of the John Does, she said, and was able to back out of the bedroom.

It's also the third allegation of multiple MSU basketball players raping a woman since 2010.

The woman said she was very hungry and thirsty. "At no time did she consent to the sexual activity", the suit said.

Uber Acquires the Bike-Share Company Jump
The bicycles have sparked controversy at times, with critics complaining they can be parked irresponsibly and litter sidewalks. JUMP is a dockless electric bike service that has rolled out in San Francisco, where it has 250 bikes, and Washington.

The lawsuit says on April 20, 2015, the woman reported the rape to a counselor at the Michigan State University Counseling Center and completed an initial intake and assessment. Jane Doe was also anxious that if she reported to police she could be cited with underage drinking charges, as she had used a fake ID to enter the East Lansing bar where she encountered the players.

Another MSUCC staff member was brought into the room and the alleged victim was not made aware why the staff member was brought in.

She told Outside the Lines that a player bought her a Long Island iced tea and that shortly after she started to drink it, she began to lose control of her muscles - dropping that drink and another.

The group "Reclaim MSU", an alliance of students and faculty calling for meaningful reform at the school, said the process remains "convoluted" for students who want to report instances of sexual assault and understand their rights.

The freshman took that to mean the staff was implying it would be best not to go to police, and was told "if you pursue this, you are going to be swimming with some really big fish", the lawsuit said.

This caused the alleged victim to be so frightened, she decided not to report the rapes.

The lawsuit states the woman wasn't told of her of her right to report the incident to MSU's Office of Institutional Equity or notified of her Title IX rights, protections and accommodations.

Photo by Derrick L. Turner of MSU Communications and Brand Strategy office. They had returned from playing in the NCAA tournament, according to the lawsuit, having lost to Duke University in the Final Four. The woman was eventually admitted to an outpatient psychiatric program as a result of the incident.

School officials would not comment on the filing. The university provided no guidance beyond that.

She resume classes in January 2016, but changed her major because her dream of becoming a sports journalist had been destroyed, according to the lawsuit. The school is being charged with creating "an unwritten, official policy that created a culture in which male MSU athletes felt entitled and emboldened to commit sexual assaults without effect".
