  • Surgeon General Jerome Adams speaks during a National African American History Month reception hosted by President Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump in the East Room of the White House in Washington in February

Jerome Adams said all Americans using high doses of prescription opioids should carry the overdose-reversing drug naloxone.

The nation's chief doctor wants more Americans to start carrying the overdose antidote naloxone to help combat the nation's opioid crisis and save lives.

More than 42,000 Americans suffered fatal opioid overdoses in 2016, his statement said.

Naloxone Hydrochloride is the ingredient in Narcan that can save the life of someone beginning to overdose.

Hoping to use a call to action from the US surgeon general as a springboard for awareness about the opioid overdose reversal drug naloxone, the Odyssey House started handing out free doses of it this week.

Naloxone, an FDA-approved medication, can be delivered via nasal mist or injection.

Mirabai won silver medal in the women's 48 kg weight class at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Glasgow. The bronze medal went to Australian showman Francois Etoundi, who lifted 305kg (136kg+169kg).

"That partnership along with the county health departments actually doing the trainings, the prescriptions, storing the product, getting it out to the community has worked really well in West Virginia in getting narcan in the hands of people who need it the most or even want it", added Gamble.

Meanwhile, "other. data sources showed there were 99 naloxone reversals in 2017 as a direct result of outreach efforts by the (department), local agencies, and syringe exchange providers across the state", according to health department spokeswoman Jenny Johnson.

Some emergency medical technicians in La Crosse believe Narcan is already being used frequently, though many who administer it may not be calling 9-1-1 for fear of prosecution by authorities. "That would be like me saying I'm not going to do CPR on someone having a heart attack because if we save them, they're just going to go out there and eat fast food and be back here all over again".

Dr. Adams sees his recommendation much like previous ones encouraging more people to learn CPR for possible emergency use.

The last surgeon general public health advisory was issued in 2005 and focused on prenatal alcohol exposure.
