As President Donald Trump warned on Twitter that US missiles "will be coming" in the wake of a suspected chemical attack in the town of Douma, Syria, Russian officials warned that any military action by the USA and its allies would be met with an aggressive response-targeting any USA missiles as well as their launch sites.

In a Wednesday morning tweet, the president called Assad a "gas killing animal" and scorned Russian Federation for associating with the Syrian leader.

The warnings come as the United States and several European countries threatened to use military action against the Syrian government and its main ally, Russia, in response to a suspected chemical weapons attack on the rebel-held town of Douma.

Trump's threat comes just hours after Russia's ambassador to Lebanon vowed that any USA missiles fired in Syria would be shot down.

"We should all be outraged at these horrific reports and images from Douma", said Dr. Peter Salama, WHO Deputy Director- General for Emergency Preparedness and Response.

"Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria", Trump tweeted.

The Pentagon has long criticised Russian Federation for using so-called "dumb bombs", or weapons that lack precision guidance technology, while striking targets in Syria.

And Russian Army Gen. Valery Gerasimov also warned the U.S. Tuesday, if it were to launch airstrikes against Syria. "Stop the arms race?" he wrote.

Mr. Trump called out Putin along with the leadership in Iran for backing Assad, who he referred to as "Animal Assad". The Syrian government has denied the accusations.

Mr Trump had on Monday warned of a quick, forceful response once responsibility for the Syria attack was established. Wednesday's statement is also notable because Trump has criticized his predecessors for telegraphing U.S. military action.

The latest threatening bellicose tone from the White House, and the pressure from the military not to give Russian Federation time to prepare its air defenses inside Syria, raises questions about whether the USA would wait for a British parliamentary endorsement for action.

Russia's military has propped up Assad's regime as it wages a multiway war against both the so-called Islamic State and various antigovernment forces.
