  • Damascus sky lights up with service to air missile fire

Prof Gillespie says the USA and its allies could have taken a different approach like imposing sanctions.

The Syrian People's Assembly "strongly condemned" the US-British-French tripartite "aggression" against Syria, saying it violated the global legitimacy principles, worldwide law and UN Charter.

During a United Nations Security Council meeting held at Russia's request to discuss the strikes, the USA warned that it was "locked and loaded", ready to launch more military strikes on Syria if President Bashar al-Assad's forces carry out a new chemical weapons attack.

Two Wisconsin U.S. senators are reacting to the U.S. airstrikes against Syria in response to an alleged chemical carried out by Syrian President Bashar Assad on his people. Syrian state media called the attack a "flagrant violation of global law".

The US is "locked and loaded" if Syria uses chemical weapons again, America's United Nations envoy Nikki Haley said today.

Reaction from the worldwide community to the strikes has ranged widely on Saturday.

France's foreign minister has threatened further missile strikes against Syria if Bashar Assad's government uses chemical weapons again.

Syria strikes - How world reacted?

British Prime Minister Theresa May said on Saturday that the United Kingdom is "confident" that the air strikes carried out by Britain, the U.S. and France had been successful, and that it had been "right and legal" to take action.

A delegation of experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, based in The Hague, is tasked with investigating an April 7 attack on Douma, just east of Damascus.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in his opening remarks urged all members of the Security Council to exercise restraint and avoid escalation in Syria.

"It's a sad day for the world, the United Nations, for its charter - which was blatantly, blatantly violated - and for the Security Council which has shirked its responsibilities", Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said.

He also claimed the military action made the humanitarian catastrophe worse and hurt civilians.

The strategic hotline was set up after Russian Federation began offering military support to President Bashar Assad in September 2015.

She had said earlier this week that Germany would not join allied military action against Syrian government forces.

"We do not seek conflict in Syria, but we can not allow such grievous violations of global law", she said, referring to the suspected chemical attack.

Trump's use of that last phrase harks back to President George W. Bush's premature declaration of victory in Iraq, where USA troops remain 15 years after the initial US military engagement there - a mistake some critics say they fear Trump might repeat on Syria.

"We want to have an engagement with Russian Federation that leads to greater peace, security and stability in the world, including in the Middle East and including in Syria", an official said.
