Russian Federation has hacked into millions of computers across Britain, including home terminals and internet routers, and may be preparing for a widescale cyber attack, U.S. and United Kingdom security chiefs said in an unprecedented warning last night.

"The points which this reinforces for us as a government, and should reinforce for all Australians, is that vigilance is absolutely imperative in terms of cyber security", Senator Payne told reporters in Adelaide on Tuesday.

"We have high confidence that Russian Federation has carried out a coordinated campaign to compromise. routers, residential and business - the things you and I have in our home", said Rob Joyce, the White House cybersecurity coordinator.

The warning is unrelated to the administration's recent military strikes on suspected chemical weapons facilities in Syria, action Russian Federation condemned.

"We are going to push back", PA quoted Joyce as saying. Rather, it is part of a broader ongoing effort by the USA government to call out bad behaviour in cyberspace and impose costs as a deterrent.

It was not retaliation for the US, UK and French attack as the US and UK had been investigating the cyber-offensive for months. "We expect the British government to declare the same".

The White House in February blamed Russian Federation for the devastating "NotPetya" cyber attack in 2017, joining the British Government in condemning Russian Federation for unleashing a virus that crippled parts of Ukraine's infrastructure and damaged computers across the globe.

These network devices make "ideal targets", said Manfra, Homeland Security's assistant secretary for cybersecurity and communications.

"Despite making significant progress, only two out of five organisations are now investing in breakthrough technologies like Machine Learning (ML), Artificial Intelligence (AI) and automation, indicating there is even more ground to be gained by increasing investment in cyber resilient innovations and solutions", the findings showed.

"They could be pre-positioning for use in times of tension", said Ciaran Martin, chief executive of the British Government's National Cyber Security Centre, who added that "millions of machines" were targeted. So a hacker can monitor, modify or disrupt it, she said. "Once you own the router, you own the traffic that is traversing the router".

In Australia, hundreds of businesses were affectedin 2017 but no information was compromised, the ABC understands.

Since 2015, the U.S. government has been receiving information from multiple sources - including private and public sector cyber security research organisations and allies - that cyber actors were exploiting large numbers of enterprise-class and residential routers and switches worldwide.

"We will not accept nor tolerate any malign foreign cyber operations, intrusions, or compromises". It was not clear whether that compromise was part of the same campaign.
