  • Scholars restore pages on sexuality that Anne Frank erased from diary

Frank, who, along with her family, hid in a secret annex to avoid Nazi capture during World War II, became famous for chronicling her time in hiding in a diary.

Mystery has swirled around the two pages of Anne Frank's diary where brown paper was pasted over the writing.

They said Anne Frank possibly wrote the text aged between 13 to 15, before she died in a Nazi concentration camp shortly before her 16th birthday.

"They bring us even closer to the girl and the writer Anne Frank", said Ronald Leopold, executive director of the Anne Frank House museum. Imagining that someone might ask her about "sexual matters", Frank tries to provide answers to an imaginary friend.

The two pages, the only pages that the teenager ever covered, were photographed in 2016 during a regular check on the condition of her diaries, said the Anne Frank House.

The Frank family lived in a modest brick building from 1934 in the Dutch capital, after fleeing rising anti-Semitism in neighbouring Germany, until they went into hiding.

"The diary of Anne Frank is a world heritage object with great historical value, and this justifies research into it", the institution said. This time, advanced imaging technology revealed the text beneath the pages.

She also wrote about prostitution.

"Anyone who reads the passages that have now been discovered will be unable to suppress a smile", he said. On prostitution, Frank noted that "in Paris they have big houses for that".

The Anne Frank House, a museum located in Frank's former hiding place, did not quote directly from the text it had recovered. He edited and published her writings in hiding after the war, making Anne Frank one of the world's most famous Holocaust victims.Anne Frank wrote the jokes on September 28, 1942, just three months after the family began their two-year stay at the hiding place.

In addition to the dirty jokes, she addressed topics like a girl getting her period for the first time, describing it as "a sign that she is ripe to have relations with a man but one doesn't do that of course before one is married". Her diary was published two years later and has been read worldwide and translated into at least 60 languages. And she wrote openly about her menstruation and conversations with van Pels on sex and sexuality.

After the group was discovered and deported, and Anne perished in Bergen-Belsen, her father - the only surviving member of the family - edited and published his daughter's writing.
