California Sees 45-Percent Increase In STDs Over 5 Years

In terms of which STD Butte County has the most of, that answer is Chlamydia.

'We've known how to control syphilis since early 1900s.

Rates of chlamydia are highest among young women, while men account for the majority of syphilis and gonorrhea cases.

The Golden State has seen a almost 45 percent increase in three of the most serious STD's - syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea - since five years ago: 300,000 such cases in 2017. Syphilis may also cause neurological problems, as well as permanent loss of vision and hearing. And result in stillbirths it does: in 2017, there were 30 syphilis-related stillbirths in California, the most since 1995.

"While there are advocates and champions for cancer, nobody is out there saying, 'I have gonorrhea and these are the best ways to treat it, '" Klausner told the Associated Press.

The health department's director, Dr. Karen Smith, urged sexually active people to use condoms and get tested regularly.

"Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the most commonly reported sexually transmitted bacterial infections in California." the report reads. Fortunately, all STDs are preventable and treatable, but we need an all-hands-on-deck approach to improve public health and save taxpayer dollars. CDC numbers for 2017 won't be available until later this year.
