The numbers are in for global smartphone shipments for the first quarter of 2018, and they're a mixed bag.

Smartphone sales fell 3 percent in the March quarter compared with a year earlier, as consumers in developed countries such as the USA and China balk at upgrading to more expense phones. This leads us to a fact that Apple iPhone X accounted for 4.6% of total smartphone market by models in Q1 2018. Huawei, Xiaomi and BBK Electronics' OPPO and Vivo are fast-growing Chinese smartphone manufacturers.

IDC found worldwide smartphone sales fell 2.9 percent to 334.3 million handsets compared with the same quarter past year.

Xiaomi is also the market leader in online retail space with a majority 57 percent market share. Well, according to stats from Strategy Analytics, Apple's iPhones have sold the most in the first quarter of 2018.

The report further noted that "Apple shipped 52.2 million iPhones during Q1 2018 up 3% as compared to the same quarter past year. iPhone X remains the top seller for Apple during the quarter". The company reported strong sales in India and China with a growth of 51% and 134% respectively.

Huawei claimed 11.8 per cent of the market in shipping 39.3m units, a YoY growth of 13.8 per cent, while Xiaomi picked up 8.4 per cent of the market with its 28m shipments and 87.8 per cent YoY growth.

"Samsung's performance varies by price tier, where share has been under pressure at the low end but has increased in both the high ($600-$900) and premium ($900+) tiers". Even so, the price increase pushed the average selling price of iPhone to $728 in the first quarter, up from $655 at the same time a year ago. The two devices have more or less kept with the high price ranges of the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus, iPhone X and Galaxy Note 8 before them.

Today Counterpoint posted a new report covering Global Smartphone Shipments with Apple being only one in three smartphone companies who bucked the downward trend in smartphone shipments for the quarter.

"We estimate the Apple iPhone X shipped 16.0 million units and captured 5 percent marketshare worldwide in Q1 2018", said Juha Winter, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics. Outside of China, Huawei is gaining market share across the Western Europe region. The smartphone market seems to be driven a lot by consumer preference.

Xiaomi - in its IPO filing in Hong Kong - revealed that of its top-five sales channels based in India; an ecommerce company, a consumer electronics distributor and a leading global ecommerce company occupy the second, fourth and fifth positions, respectively. However, emerging markets still offer a sizeable opportunity for OEMs to expand and grow as smartphone penetration by users in still around 45 percent.

Apple took the top four spots rounded out with the iPhone 8 at 12.5M, iPhone 8 Plus at 8.3M, and iPhone 7 at 5.6M.
