Celtics take Game 1 of East finals, beating Cavaliers 108-83

  • Cleveland Cavaliers forward Le Bron James

It gives James fewer opportunities to dictate matchups, and it showed in Game 1. Kyle Korver was 1-of-5 from three.

"I have zero level of concern at this stage", James said after the Celtics blew the Cavs out in the opening game - a rare poor playoff outing for James. The Cavaliers missed their first 14 3-point attempts of the game and shot just 32 per cent in the first half.

That's not the case for the Celtics and, while Morris may feel like he's individually better-suited for guarding James than his teammates, their ability to match his size, athleticism and strength is the doing of Celtics general manager and president of basketball operations Danny Ainge, the man responsible for putting together their team. "He's our rock. He's the guy we really, really lean on". Following their 108-83 defeat in Game 1 on Sunday, the Cavs are looking to even their series with the Celtics at one game apiece before heading back to Cleveland for Game 3 on Sunday.

As for the Celtics, they are now 34-17-2 ATS and 32-21 SU this season against winning teams.

If you were too busy watching Jaylen Brown score a game-high 23 points or the Celtics somehow managing to stifle LeBron James into 5-of-16 shooting for 15 points in Game 1, see if you could spot Auerbach's signature near Boston's bench during Game 2.

There's also the fact that James is averaging 41 points, 11 rebounds, and shooting almost 65 percent in three games following a loss this postseason.

LeBron rarely has bad games back-to-back though, particularly in the playoffs, and he will come out breathing fire in Game 2. "It's what makes us the best team that we can be".

The Boston Celtics appear ready for just that. "We've got a different team, just like they do, and a lot of younger guys". When they did give up the switch, it was with goal and with a plan for how to hold their own against the mismatch, without selling out the defensive scheme to adjust, and also while making the Cavaliers offense work for that switch and use up precious seconds on the shot clock before beginning to work against the mismatch.

But in his final answer Monday, Lue dropped an analytical nugget that revealed he's likely to start center Tristan Thompson in tonight's Game 2 against the Celtics. The Celtics ended up shooting 51.2 percent from the floor as a team.

"We were great", Horford said.

But the real way that Boston was able to impact Cleveland's offense was through solid execution on their own offensive end.

The Cavaliers, coming off a layoff that followed a four-game sweep of the Toronto Raptors, offered little resistance in the opener. It was a tough loss. "We'll watch the film and try to get better". The Cavaliers need to shoot much better in game 2, as they were just 4-26 (15.4%) from the three point line in game 1. "We'll look to redeem ourselves", declared James. They have the best defense in the league, as they constantly adjust to their opponent's game plan, but still stay disciplined in their approach.
