  • South Korea says military drills will go on

Though North Korea has been for the most part silent about its intentions for the meeting, the announcements underscore two of its biggest concerns - the future of the almost 30,000 US troops in South Korea and claims coming out of Washington lately that sanctions and Trump's "maximum pressure" policy are what drove Kim to the negotiating table.

North Korea's threat to cancel a June 12 summit between President Donald Trump and its leader, Kim Jong Un, is souring the Asian air. "We just can't do it", he said of North Korea, which has been working on missiles capable of hitting the United States.

However, he stressed the USA would only be compelled to act if a deal can not be reached with North Korea, adding: "We can not let that country have nukes. This would be with Kim Jong-un, something where he'd be there, he'd be in his country, he'd be running his country". "We never said to Gaddafi, "Oh, we're going to give you protection", he said.

Foreign policy experts have suggested that North Korea's announcement that the proposed summit was in jeopardy was partly in response to renowned foreign policy hawk Mr Bolton's comments in an interview with CBS on Sunday.

He joked about attacking North Korea should the talks fail. On a piece of paper, he outlined what Mao wanted, laid them out against the goals of the United States, and then mapped out areas of potential agreement.

The Chinese were treated so indulgently by past administrations, Trump said, he doubted high-level trade talks with the People's Republic would be successful. "And it's up to President Trump to make sure that they don't".

Assuming that the two countries would have their summit, Trump said they would have a "good relationship" and that Kim's regime would get protections that will be "very strong".

Preparations for the Trump Kim summit were still going ahead on Friday despite the confusion over the North Korean statements, Trump said on Thursday.

President Trump offered assurances that North Korea would benefit from any deal it reaches with the US regarding its nuclear program, amid uncertainty about whether negotiations between the two countries will actually take place.

Yet he has also been complimentary to Kim and has spoken of USA investment that could flow into the North's creaking power grid and economy in the event of a nuclear deal.
