A wave of deadly suicide bombings that have rocked Indonesia's second biggest city Surabaya are linked to local extremist network Jamaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), which has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group (IS). "Two people were riding (on the motorcycle) and a woman was sitting at the back".

The government may offer more support to Indonesia, in the wake of the bombings. The father, 50-year-old Tri Murtiono, took his wife and three children, strapped them with homemade bombs, and blew themselves up at the entrance gate to the police station.

Karnavian said the father drove a bomb-laden vehicle into the city's Pentecostal church.

Before Sunday's Surabaya church bombings, this type of explosive was first reportedly used by Leopard Wisnu Kumala, a 29-year-old man who attempted to extort money from Alam Sutra Mall management by threatening to explode several bombs in the mall in October 2015.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo called the attacks "the act of cowards, undignified and barbaric". On Sunday, Islamist suicide bombers attacked three churches, killing at least 13 people and wounding about 40.

JAD has been linked to a series of other plots in Indonesia, including a firebomb attack on a church that killed a toddler and a plan to launch a Christmas-time suicide bombing. After some major successes tackling terrorism since 2001, there has been a resurgence in recent years, including in January 2016 when four suicide bombers and gunmen attacked a shopping area in the capital, Jakarta. The group also claimed responsibility for a hostage-taking ordeal last week by imprisoned Islamic militants at a detention center near Jakarta in which six officers were killed.

What attacks have they carried out?

According to Machfud, Abu Bakr taught radical terrorist ideology to the families but did not give any details regarding what, if any, role he had in planning or undertaking the attacks.

Later in the day, police said another family attempted to carry out an attack the Surabaya suburb of Sidoarjo. The newspaper reported that 12 worshippers died in the church attacks. "We must tighten security", he said.

According to police, the accused Oepriarto was friends with the other family who carried police headquarters bombing out Monday's and a third family who died after homemade bombs exploded in their apartment on Sunday night.

Although considered Indonesia's largest pro-IS coalition, JAD's structure and links to the worldwide terror network are murky.
