"It can not be accepted that we announce a ceasefire, despite their (militants) continuous attacks on our security forces".

He added: "Many still recall that terrorists roamed freely in this period".

The BJP on Thursday rejected chief minister Mehbooba Mufti's call for a unilateral ceasefire during Ramazan and the Amarnath Yatra and virtually accused her of lying when she claimed the proposal had achieved a consensus at Wednesday's all-party meeting.

The decision was taken during an all-party meeting, where CM Mufti said the BJP-led NDA government would be approached with a request to halt operations of the security forces during these months.

A second official familiar with the development said a unilateral ceasefire within the valley is highly unlikely. "Is there any guarantee that the situation would not repeat itself?" "Everyone also agreed that we meet PM Modi and express our concerns over the situation in Jammu and Kashmir discuss how do we reach out to people of J&K". The holy month of Ramzan is to start from 17 May, subject to the sighting of the moon.

Sources told The Times of India that a ceasefire will indicate whether India and Pakistan are ready for normal and positive political dialogue, after heightened tensions between the two nations in 2017 and 2018.

"We told the CM at the all-party meeting on Wednesday that the state government can not look towards the Centre for everything", Sethi said.

The party said the state government is making preparations for Prime Minister's upcoming visit to the state, "But it is not for ceasefire or anything".

The BJP, Panthers Party and some other parties did not support the suggestion that was put forward by an independent MLA Engineer Rashid, he said.

The National Conference working president and former chief minister, Omar Abdullah criticised the PDP for not taking into confidence its ally on the issue of a ceasefire. "Yet she will shamelessly cling to power because that's all that matters to her".

Mehbooba Mufti has come under strong criticism after 16 people, including eight militants, seven residents and a tourist were killed in separate incidents of violence in the past four days.
