Locked at 40-40 and 5-5 in the third set with the 42nd ranked Maria Sakkari, Pliskova put away an overhead which was incorrectly deemed to have missed the sideline.

Former world tennis no.1 Karolina Pliskova has channelled her inner John McEnroe at the Italian Open, launching a furious tirade at an erroneous umpire.

After the match, Pliskova approached the umpire's chair and faked a handshake before unloading on the chair with her racket. The point happened in the final set when Pliskova was serving a 30-30 and five games all. She then hit her racquet against the umpire's chair "several times", USA Today reports, leaving a gaping hole.

The decision prompted fury from fans online, some calling for the umpire to be removed from their position, whilst some claimed Pliskova went too far in her actions.

Pliskova's twin sister Kristyna took to Twitter to defend her, claiming Mrozinska as the "worst she has ever seen" and hoped that she would "never referee" a match involving herself or her sister.

USA Today adds that no punishment or fine has yet to be announced by the Women's Tennis Association.

"Nothing justifies destroying the umpire's chair".
