"If the lava continues to recede we may move into a period of these steam-driven explosions", she said of chances of explosive eruptions in the crater if water begins to mix with magma. When it hits the level of the water table beneath the Kilauea caldera, likely sometime mid-month, the influx of water into the conduit could trigger steam-driven eruptions, geologists said. The groundwater interacts with the hot rock, and steam pressure builds and can cause explosions. In 1924 blocks were thrown up to 0.6 miles from the vent and pebble-sized rocks several miles away.

Gov. David Ige asked President Donald Trump to issue a disaster declaration for Hawaii as a result of the ongoing earthquakes and volcano eruption, according to a press release.

Lava has flowed from fissures and has destroyed at least 36 homes and other buildings, plus anything else in its path, since it erupted about a week ago.

Kilauea has been in a state of almost constant eruption for 35 years.

Earlier in the day US Army veteran Delance Weigel, 71, collected some of his prized possessions as steam and sulphur dioxide gas rose out of cracks in the street. He was asleep on the couch in his home when a fissure opened up 2,000 feet (610 meters) away, spewing out lava and gas.

Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will shut down Friday in anticipation of a possible explosive event at Kilauea volcano's summit crater. He says it would be "very hazardous" if a volcanic vent were to open under the facility where the fuel is stored.

Authorities previously ordered almost 2,000 residents to leave the two communities in the mostly rural district of Puna on Hawaii's Big Island last Thursday. But some ignored the order and stayed to watch over their property.

Leilani Estates, normally home to 1600 residents, and the nearby Lanipuna Gardens, with a population of 300 residents, have been evacuated. On Sunday, Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno said the lava showed no sign of slowing down. The 57-year-old, who recently retired to the area from Orange County, California, said he had seen drone footage showing lava flowing up his driveway, causing two propane tanks to explode.

Police say a Leilani Estates resident returned to his home Wednesday to retrieve personal belongings when he saw the man leaving his house.

"Presently, during the drawdown of the lava column, rockfalls from the steep enclosing walls of the Overlook crater vent impact the lake and produce small ash clouds".

Volcanic activity resumed on the Big Island of Hawaii early Tuesday evening, causing further destruction and prompting new safety concerns in the wake of last week's eruption, authorities said.

The plant is across the highway from where lava has been erupting in the Leilani Estates residential neighbourhood. In the first image, the red areas are vegetation, and the black and gray areas are old lava flows.

"I need to figure that out", she said with tears in her eyes.
