Former Liverpool midfielder John Barnes has warned Steven Gerrard not to consider taking the Rangers job as competing with Celtic is an nearly impossible job.

The former Liverpool and England captain, now in charge of the under-18s side at Anfield, said on BT Sport on Tuesday night that he has held initial discussions with the Scottish Premiership club.

Today's Hoops rumour mill: Southampton linked with move for Australian star and ex-Celtic boss warns Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard told BT Sport earlier this week: "I've held initial talks with Rangers and I plan to pick them up in a couple of days time".

Rangers last won the Scottish Premiership title in 2011.

'I'm busy for a couple of days now and I'll pick it up on Thursday and we'll see if we can progress it'.

The company recently overhauled its app in the midst of intense competition from Facebook and that company's Instagram platform. The group reported that its total revenue for the quarter of US$230.7mln missed analysts' expectations of US$244.5mln.

Gerrard will be in Italy on Wednesday working as a TV pundit for Liverpool's Champions League semifinal against Roma.

Gers said in a statement: "Rangers International Football Club PLC notify the resignation of two directors, Mr Paul Murray and Mr Barry Scott". After being promised fresh investment in the squad, the 37-year-old appears to have agreed terms and is expected to appoint former Liverpool teammate Gary McAllister as his assistant.

Meanwhile, former England teammate Frank Lampard backed Gerrard to handle the pressure due to his experiences as a player at Liverpool.

"So I would urge Rangers fans to give him that opportunity and have faith in him knowing that it may not happen overnight".

Arsenal idol Wright said: "With Steven being the personality that he is, wherever he goes, he is going to have that focus on him, so you might as well go somewhere like Rangers where their aim is to get closer to Celtic".
