  • Gina Haspel, CIA pick, easily clears intel committee

The Senate Intelligence Committee voted 10-5 behind closed doors Wednesday to advance Gina Haspel's nomination.

Haspel served in several positions at the agency during her 30-year career including deputy director of the National Clandestine Service, chief of staff for the Directorate of Operations and chief of station for multiple stations in Europe and Eurasia.

Earlier yesterday, United States President Donald Trump took to his Twitter account to showcase his support for Haspel to be elected to the top post in the intelligence agency.

U.S. Rep. John Faso, R-19, approves Haspel's nomination, he said Tuesday.

Amid all his talk of trust, however, Warner failed to secure any statement sufficient to convince any but the most credulous critics that Haspel would stand up to any egregious requests that President Donald Trump might ask of the Central Intelligence Agency.

Democratic Senator Heidi Heitkamp and Bill Nelson said they will also vote to for Haspel's confirmation.

Yet the Senate now stands poised to confirm the nomination of Gina Haspel as CIA Director. In addition, she drafted a 2005 memo ordering the destruction of videotapes of torture sessions at the Thailand "black site" in the face of demands that the evidence be turned over to congressional investigators.

Emilia Clarke hates the phrase 'strong women'
The actress - who stars as Daenerys Targaryen in the hit HBO fantasy drama - said: "On 'Game of Thrones , ' I have always been paid the same amount as my male co-stars".

Among those who opposed Haspel's confirmation is the ailing John McCain, who is a senior member of the ruling Republicans and the party's presidential nominee in 2008.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., said the world was watching the confirmation vote, which he called a "referendum on torture".

American bourgeois "democracy" has been reduced, behind the threadbare trappings of parliamentary procedures, to a dictatorship run by a military/intelligence/industrial apparatus that operates outside of any legal restraints.

The CIA started its torture program - the heart of the controversy surrounding Haspel's appointment - in the summer of 2002, which was months after the capture of Abu Zubaydah - the first detainee the agency took into custody and initially developed its list of enhanced interrogation techniques, like waterboarding.

Jeff Flake of Arizona, announced his opposition to Haspel.

The first thing I want to do is apologize: to [accuser] Leeann, to everyone else who was part of that tour, to everyone who has worked for me, to everyone I represent, and to everyone who counts on me to be an ally and supporter and champion of women.
The split makes it crucial for Haspel to get support from the opposition to cross the 51 threshhold for confirmation. "Should we trust that she will have the moral compass to stand up and say 'No?'" he asked. "My questions about Ms. Haspel's role in the destruction of videotapes relevant to discussions occurring in Congress regarding the program have not been adequately answered". Trump, on the other hand says waterboarding and "a lot more" is what he demands.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., said the nomination was not just about Haspel, but the US grappling with its past mistakes. Yet Haspel has refused to publicly confirm her role in al-Nashiri's torture while finding a way to release information about meeting the late Mother Teresa.
