On the NASA side, Uber is expanding an agreement with the space agency.

These three cities will be the first to offer uberAIR flights, with the goals of operating demonstrator flights starting in 2020 and beginning commercial operations in 2023, the statement said.

The U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, Army Research Laboratory (ARL) announced a new research and development partnership with Uber during the company's second annual Elevate conference in Los Angeles this week. Uber announced that it will be partnering with a number of vehicle makers including Embraer, Pipistrel, and Karem.

The overall idea of the aerial taxi service is to provide cities with more than two million citizens spread out over a large and dispersed area with the means to quickly get in and out of central spots.

Terrorism suspected as Paris knife attacker kills one, injures four
The attacker - who has not been identified - was shot and killed by police, Reuters reported , citing local police sources. A friend came to her aid and the attacker left, "hitting on all the doors, all the shops", the witness told BFM.

Uber is also partnering with Boeing subsidiary Aurora Flight Sciences and Bell to develop aircraft for the flying taxi project.

These VTOL vehicles (pronounced vee-tol), would theoretically help passengers leapfrog snarling traffic and speed up transportation between suburbs and cities. The company's design involves light but rigid rotors that can reposition depending on whether the aircraft is taking off or flying. The air taxis will then fly 1,000 to 2,000 feet off the ground, something Uber says will be possible thanks to the electric motors and multiple props, which make the aircraft quieter than a helicopter. Uber first announced its flying vehicle plans in 2016 when it released a white paper describing its vision of the future.

Riders will catch their uberAIR flights on Skyports, the stations located on top of the buildings and an eVTOL (Electric Vertical Take Off and Landing) vehicle is the technical name for the flying craft design being used on uberAIR. News later surfaced that the company wouldn't be renewing its testing permit with California, but according to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, the tests may resume later on this year. After this, NASA will take the results and identify the key issues these added aircraft to crowded airspace would pose.

Flying cars have attracted the attention of other technology companies.
