Trial Begins For Dallas Uber Driver Accused Of Sexual Assault

  • Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi has made company culture a priority

It was the first time that numbers have been put to the issue.

"So moving forward, survivors will be free to choose to resolve their individual claims in the venue they prefer". "This will not be the last issue Uber has to clean up to show it is dealing with all issues so that customers will trust the brand".

The rideshare business stated Tuesday it will not push into arbitration travelers who declare that they have actually been sexually attacked or bugged by motorists- something Uber states was formerly needed under its regards to service.

" We believe it is extremely, crucial to enable survivors of sexual assault and unwanted sexual advances the control and company that was, honestly, removed from them because event", Uber's primary legal officer, Tony West, informed the reporter in a phone interview.

"You want people to report lower level infractions so you can nip them in the bud before they become bigger problems", she said.

Chammout was among a group of drivers who were grandfathered into Uber's system.

Uber announced that victims will also have the option to settle their claims without a confidentiality provision, highlighting their push to "end the culture of silence that surrounds sexual violence". As with the arbitration change, this will apply to cases now pending and cases moving forward.

The list of experts prosecutors could call to testify include: a hospital nurse, a toxicologist, and an advocate for victims of sexual assault.

The lack of transparency about the number of incidents perpetrated by drivers has been a sticking point by victims in lawsuits. Even so, the company says it "agree [s] with the changes" and isn't shy about following its rival's lead in most respects. "We wish to bring these numbers exposed". "We think they're going to be disturbing because it is never easy to report sexual assault".

At least 31 drivers have been convicted for crimes ranging from forcible touching and false imprisonment to rape, and dozens of criminal and civil cases are pending, CNN found.

Uber has faced questions about how often its drivers assault or harass passengers.

In the meantime, the fate of many of those women's assault cases is far from clear.

"When it comes to categorizing this data for public release, no uniform industry standard for reporting exists today", West wrote. In fact, there is no data to reliably or accurately compare reports against Uber drivers versus taxi drivers or limo drivers, or Uber versus buses, subways, airplanes or trains.

"One of our core values as a company is to always do the right thing", Khosrowshahi says in the spot.

The shift will allow riders and drivers to file allegations of rape, sexual assault and harassment in courts and mediation, rather than being locked into an arbitration hearing.

Wigdor attorney Jeanne M. Christensen, who is representing women in the class-action suit against Uber, said ending forced arbitration for individual cases was a "critical step" and congratulated the firm for its decision.

The court had given Uber until Wednesday to say whether it would require the women to submit their claims to arbitration.

After just 8 weeks on the job, our CEO Dara Khosrowshahi introduced a new mantra to employees: "We do the right thing, period".

One other tech company ― Microsoft ― has gotten rid of forced arbitration in harassment lawsuits. She joined California lawmakers in April to introduce a state bill that would ban forced arbitration. "What's most important is for individual survivors to be able to tell their individual stories".
