  • Talks stalled, UC strike to begin Monday morning

Questioned how much the strike is costing UC Davis, chief spokesman and nursing director Toby Marsh said that amount can not be determined. "We have over 5,000 employees that make more than the governor while the majority of our AFSCME workers qualify for some form of financial assistance".

Service workers represented by Local 3299 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees began the walkout Monday, demanding higher salaries and bolstered staffing.

State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez Fletcher wrote a letter to UC President Janet Napolitano, dated May 4, that asked the UC system to conduct good faith negotiations with the union and address racial and gender income inequalities among employees. "We have fought for the last time [in negotiations] to keep it [retirement age] at 60; they want to change it to 65.all the old employees that have been here stay in a plan that can eventually bankrupt because there's nobody paying into the retirement [fund]".

"We want protection for women, we want protection for people of color, we want protection for Latinos, and we want protection from outsourcing for jobs", he told Noozhawk.

UC San Francisco spokeswoman Elizabeth Fernandez said Friday that UCSF Medical Center has rescheduled 300 surgeries and appointments for 800 cancer patients.

UC spokeswoman Claire Doan said AFSCME service workers are already paid at or above market rates and that the union is demanding a almost 20 percent pay raise over three years.

The UC said in a statement it believes it is inappropriate for the union to use the strike as a negotiating tactic and added the University proposed multiyear wage increases and excellent health and retirement benefits during the contract negotiations.

More than 20,000 members of the University of California's largest employee union left work on Monday.

All UC medical centers are reportedly fully operational and staffed with doctors, nurses and critical care personnel with contract workers replacing those involved in the union walkout.

Eric Gudz, a current candidate for the Davis City Council, said he was participating in solidarity with his "union sisters and brothers".

"Under state law, strikes that a pose a substantial and imminent threat to vital public services like patient care are illegal", Beechem said.

They said their final officer included, in addition to the pay raises, a lump-sum payment upon contract ratification, health benefits consistent with those of other workers and continuation of pension benefits for existing employees. "We got the power!" as they marched outside the hospital's emergency room. Thousands of appointments had to be postponed at UCSF's Mission Bay and Parnassus Avenue campuses.

Early Tuesday afternoon, she sat outside the heart hospital in a wheelchair, a medical oxygen tube in her nose and an intravenous medication bag hanging to her right as she watched and listened to protesters screaming slogans on the other side of the medical complex's main circular drive.

Both UC Santa Cruz and UC Berkeley officials said shuttle services were not running during the strike.
