  • Self-driving car crash in Arizona: Waymo car involved in Chandler crash

ABC15 Arizona has released footage of the collision's aftermath, which shows the Waymo vehicle, a Chrysler minivan, nearby a Honda sedan that's had its front end demolished.

One of Waymo's self-driving minivans has been involved in a road crash in Arizona, the company has confirmed, though in this instance there doesn't seem to have been much the autonomous vehicle could've done to avoid a hit - the video you can see below shows another auto swerving straight into it. The Honda sedan entered the opposite lane and ended up hitting the side of the Waymo self-driving minivan.

The operator in the driver's seat sustained minor injuries.

Chandler Police Detective Seth Tyler told the Phoenix New Times that the Waymo minivan was not the "violator vehicle" and it "just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time".

On Friday afternoon around noon, a Honda Sedan was travelling eastbound on Chandler Blvd. which had to swerve to avoid striking a vehicle which was traveling northbound. Arizona changed its rules on autonomous vehicle testing late in 2017, opening the door to driverless cars being operated without a human behind the wheel. Tyler went on to say the "The Waymo vehicle was rolling, but I don't think it was going very fast". The Waymo self-driving vehicle was said to be travelling at a low speed which minimised the impact of the crash. It was fortunate that the person behind the wheel of the self-driving vehicle suffered only minor injuries.

Waymo is a self-driving vehicle initiative from Google's parent company Alphabet.

The safety of self-driving technology has come under recent scrutiny. That vehicle was also in autonomous vehicle mode when the collision occurred.

Less than two months ago, an Uber self-driving vehicle hit and killed a pedestrian as she crossed the street.

Waymo did not immediately respond to Newsweek's request for comment.

Authorities are still investigating that crash, but not long after, Arizona's governor suspended Uber's self-driving vehicle testing in the state.
